The Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester welcomed championship-level excitement to the Club on Wednesday as members had the opportunity to meet professional boxers, learn new skills, and take part in a special boxing exhibition following a press conference announcing former heavyweight champion Hasim “The Rock” Rahman’s boxing comeback.

Rahman, a former two-time heavyweight champion known for his historic upset victory over Lennox Lewis, announced his return to boxing during a Rochester press conference ahead of a July fight card at ESL Ballpark that will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester, Foodlink, and the Lou Gramm Foundation.

Following the announcement, Rahman and Rochester boxer “Irish” Red Williams visited the Club for an afternoon that quickly became unforgettable for members.

Club youth had the chance to demonstrate their own boxing skills, learn techniques from experienced fighters, and spend time one-on-one with professional athletes they had only heard about before. Members were excited to ask questions, pose for photos, and experience the energy and discipline that comes with the sport of boxing.

The fighters also enjoyed exploring the Club and connecting with members throughout the afternoon. From conversations in program areas to demonstrations in the gym, the event showcased how sports can inspire confidence, mentorship, and meaningful community connections.

“This was more than just a boxing exhibition,” said Dwayne Mahoney, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester. “Our members were able to interact with athletes who shared their experiences, encouraged them, and made them feel special. You could see how much it meant to the kids.”

The event brought together community members, boxing fans, and Club families for an afternoon full of excitement, encouragement, and positive memories — another reminder that Rochester truly needs Club Kids.
