The Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester celebrated an unforgettable afternoon of learning, achievement, and community on Friday, June 26, as members, families, staff, and supporters gathered for our annual Accelerated Reading (AR) Celebration.

The event recognized the incredible dedication our young readers demonstrated throughout the school year. Members were honored for reaching reading milestones, improving their literacy skills, and embracing the joy of reading through the Club’s Accelerated Reading Program. Awards were presented to recognize their hard work and perseverance, while families joined in celebrating each accomplishment.

The celebration was filled with fun, featuring games, food, music, bounce houses, and plenty of opportunities for members to spend time with friends while celebrating a successful year of reading.

One of the day’s biggest highlights was welcoming Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester alumnus and New Orleans Pelicans guard Melvin Council Jr. back to the Club. Melvin spent time meeting members, signing autographs, taking photos, and sharing words of encouragement with the next generation of Club youth. His return served as a powerful reminder of what is possible through hard work, dedication, and the support of a caring community. For many members, the opportunity to meet a former Club kid now playing in the NBA made the celebration even more memorable and inspiring.

“The Accelerated Reading Celebration is one of our favorite days of the year because it recognizes the hard work our members have put into their education,” said Robert J. Johnson, Director of Marketing & Public Relations for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester. “Having Melvin Council Jr. return as a New Orleans Pelicans player made the day even more special. Our members saw firsthand that success is built through dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to learning—both in the classroom and beyond.”

The Accelerated Reading Program is one of the Club’s signature educational initiatives, encouraging members to develop strong reading habits, improve comprehension, and foster a lifelong love of learning. Throughout the school year, members set reading goals, complete quizzes to measure comprehension, and earn recognition for their achievements.

The annual AR Celebration is more than an awards ceremony—it’s a reflection of the Club’s commitment to academic success and creating opportunities for every young person to thrive. By recognizing hard work and surrounding members with positive role models, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester continues to inspire youth to dream big, work hard, and believe in their potential.

Congratulations to all of our Accelerated Reading participants for an outstanding year. We are incredibly proud of your accomplishments and look forward to seeing all that you achieve in the year ahead.
