WHAT WE DO
Mission:
The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester board, staff
and
volunteers is to help youth of all backgrounds, with special concerns
for those from disadvantaged circumstances, develop the qualities
needed to become responsible citizens and leaders. Core program engage
youth in activities with adults, peers and family members that enable
them to enhance self-esteem and to develop to full potential.
The
Boys & Girls Club of Rochester operates after-school
programming at
six sites across the city of Rochester designed to produce positive
youth outcomes in the following areas:
1. Leadership
& Character Development
– Programs like Keystone Club, Teen Supreme and Basik to
Power
empower youth to support and influence their Club and community,
sustain meaningful relations with others, develop a positive self
image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and
others' cultural identities.
2. Education
& Career Development
– Our highly successful Accelerated Reading and Power Hour
tutorial programs enable youth to become proficient in basic
educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and
embrace technology to optimize employability.
3. Health &
Life Skills
– SMART Moves, SMART Girls, Street SMART and Race Against
Drugs
develop young people's capacity to engage in the positive behaviors
that nurture their own well being, set personal goals and develop the
competencies necessary to live successfully as self-sufficient adults.
4. The Arts
– Art projects like the one displayed on the outside of our
building enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural
awareness through knowledge and appreciation of visual and tactile arts
and crafts, performing arts and creative writing.
5. Sports, Fitness
& Recreation
– Programs like Triple Play develop fitness, positive use of
leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the
environment and social and interpersonal skills.
When club members take part in these components of club programming
they accomplish the following:
- Improve
their reading comprehension while becoming emerging readers. Through
phonics instruction non-readers will develop the ability to read, and
in turn become more proficient in basic educational disciplines.
- Develop
skills that promote a healthy lifestyle by taking part in regular
physical fitness activities, accessing health care resources and
building a regiment of positive behaviors. They will learn to use sound
judgment about personal safety, drugs and premature sexual activity.
- Develop
and sustain positive relationships with others with a special emphasis
on understanding their own cultural identity and the cultures of others.
- Become civically responsible by engaging in
service to their school and community.
- Develop
feelings that the after school program is a safe haven for students.
Young people will learn Internet safety and conflict resolution.
